Archive for July, 2010

Many thanks to everyone who came out to the second edition of our reading series at The Canvas. Though Portland was suffering from an excruciating wave of heat, there were still a brave few who managed to make it out to Northwest and hear some excellent tales of “Adventure and Exploration.”

Oregonian travel columnist and wanderer extraordinaire Shawn Donley read about scaling a dental-looking Cairo rock face in his essay “Pulling the Tooth.” Becca Deysach read from her essay “Stocky Legs and All” (which appeared in this past issue of Rough Copy) about the vicissitudes of a particularly harsh femoral injury, and the remarkable Merridawn Duckler read about her varied adventures in a Unitarian summer camp.

Topped off by our host Ashley’s retelling of a career defining spirit-journey, the evening was, as advertised, “adventurous.”

Next month’s topic (“Fun and Games”) promises a similar crop of talent, and perhaps a corresponding consumption of heat-combating microbrews, so stay tuned. Below are some pictures taken by Rough Copy’s own Ashawnta Jackson of this, and last month’s event. Thank you so much to our readers and we’ll see you all next month!
